Do You Feel Like You Aren’t Ready Yet?

October 14, 2017 - 9 Comments

A failure to get shit done is a very common problem among entrepreneurs. We're all better at coming up with ideas than at seeing them through to completion (as we've discovered in various previous posts).

When you procrastinate and deliberate instead of finishing and publishing, you always have good reasons. At least, they sound like really good reasons when you tell them to yourself...

One of the most common reasons to put things off is the feeling of being unprepared. You're just not ready for this yet. You just need to get a bit better, learn a bit more,...

In this video, I reveal something about myself that will help you change your mind and get more done.

Shane Melaugh, Copywriting Expert (?)

The clearest example of what I talk about in the video, in my own work, is copywriting. I remember very clearly, the first time I sat down to write a sales page. I felt utterly unprepared for this. I was acutely aware of just how lacking my copywriting skills were.

And you know what? That feeling has stuck with me. I still don't feel like a copywriter, even though copy I've written has made a lot of money. Even though I've written countless sales pages, landing pages, emails, ads - you name it. I still feel like I don't really know what I'm doing, most of the time.

And there's a funny contrast here, too: people have asked to hire me as a copywriter, several times. I've never advertised this as an available service.

So, what we have here is a clear difference between the inside and outside perspectives. Inside, to me, it feels like copywriting is just incredibly difficult and in all the other stuff I do as an entrepreneur and CEO I've never had enough time to dedicate to truly mastering this craft. On the outside, people see the copy I write and assume I must be an expert, to the degree where they hope to hire me.

2 Reasons to Get On With it

With this, you have two strong reasons to ignore your feeling of unpreparedness and just get on with it:

  1. The feeling of unpreparedness is normal and you'll have to get used to working inspite of it anyway, no matter how good you get at something.
  2. The way you feel about things may have nothing to do with how things really are or how they appear from the outside.

I hope this helps you get more productive and get better at shipping. Let me know your thoughts and questions by leaving a comment below!
