Podcast Episode 9: Traffic, Blogging and Calling Out Bad Guys with Ana Hoffman

In this podcast episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with Ana Hoffman from the Traffic Generation Cafe.

Ana, who was also featured in our recent expert roundup, started blogging about three years ago and she quickly went from zero to getting thousands of visitors to her site and building a large and active community.

In this interview, she talks about the importance of having a unique voice as a blogger, the methods she used (and still uses) to get ever increasing numbers of visitors to her site, her experience with scammy network marketing companies (and what happens when she calls them out on their scamminess) and much more.

g’day Shane! (and Ana) – I barely noticed Paul there LOL

Great interview guys, I think Ana is right on the money, build her brand, integrity, quality and skill based, money will come, and stay. MLM, all that rubbish, that is for the newbies who don’t know any better. I’ve seen a few big name IM bloggers flogging that ship lately, it’s really a shame. I view them, and their business plan very differently from how I did months ago. A couple have contacted me to hook up, I’m like, yeah, I’ll get back to you on that one! I love how Shane says “hey come here for neg reviews – they’re always welcome here!!” lol

Didn’t that other guy (who EN broke away from and went into competition with) just close up that huge networking company, I mean that really shows what it’s all about. Here today, gone tomorrow….

    :) Kate

Ha, yeah I was too busy enjoying the podcast myself :)

How awesome is this podcast. Two honest and forthright internet marketers get together and discuss how to be successful by being honorable and decent human beings.

I attended two different webinars this week with famous IM gurus and I felt I needed a shower after each one. The IM guru’s were both saying the “right” words and almost everyone on the webinar (at least they reported were gushing all over them) but if you listened between the lines you could hear that all they cared about was making their quick buck by turning their customers (suckers) into their own personal ATM machines. I did buy anything from them – never will but it was more than a little sad that others did. ( I assume)

Shane – you and Ana need to start a business together. You are both lights in the wilderness in a dark forest of dubious and nefarious characters. Two intelligent young marketers hell bent on doing what is right and profitable but not at the expense of those “seeking the dream”.

Thank you Shane for introducing me to Ana Hoffman – now I have two guiding lights that I can trust.

    Hi Shane

Enjoyed the Podcast and of course I had to pop over to check out what Ana thought about ‘Empower Network’.

When I got there, it as only a few seconds before a pop up covered what I was trying to read. I could find no way to dimiss it so…

I had to leave. Now I may never know what she had to say. Too bad, lose/lose.

OMG, I hope that wasn’t Hybrid Connect!

  • Renee says:

This podcast is very timely for me. Especially the section where you both discussed being confident and assertive when recommending an offer.

I’m about to begin making my own products. Even though I am by nature very assertive I’ve been feeling surprising insecure about the whole product creation and promotion process.

This podcast was a reminder to me to; create the best product I know how and promote it with confidence.

    Thanks Shane,

I think I will visit Ana’s Blog and subscribe to the email list.
    Thanks for the informative podcast.

  • Philip says:

Shane, thanks so much for introducing me to Ana; she put so much of what’s been boiling in me re: the integrity of the IM world (or the lack of it) into words. And also my thanks to you for your generosity; since I came across you, aside from receiving so much usable, put-into-practice info, my attitude has changed about customer value and what running an online business is all about. Thanks, Philip

  • Erik says:

Thanks for a really interesting podcast. You Ana made me interested to learn more about your techniques.

I went to your site and found a very aggressive way to build your list. The popup is actually a content locker…I cant get access to your site if I don’t give you my email.

To me it seems a bit too aggressive. In this case I had listened to the podcast before and knew that I would sign up but otherwise I certainly had left without joining.

Maybe you have set the popup exactly like this for people that you “know” are really presold to your content….if that is the case…really hi tech in my books :-)

I am not going to defend Empower Network, i haven’t used them and from what i can tell from reading Ana’s review is that the training is sub par and isn’t anything you can’t find online for free.

That being said, i currently make 5-figures a month in the iGaming niche basically doing what Ana said you can’t build a business doing. IE: Spinning a bunch of articles and submitting them everywhere.

I am a member of virtually every single blog network that exists, i have over 500 unique spun articles that i have outsourced. And my sites have tens and tens of thousands of links. I basically spam my way to search engine rankings. I put pages at the top, stick big CTA’s on my pages and ride all the way to the bank.

I also lose traffic with virtually every single Google update when they can a bunch of my sites.

I have my own private blog network also. I have web 2.0’s ranking, i have mini sites ranking and i have authority sites ranking.

When Ana said “You can’t build a business doing that”, i have basically done that for the last two years and i make good money doing it with my $100 cpa’s and high player values.

Is this sustainable? Hell no. I probably wont be able to do this in 5 years, but right now i’m kicking ass and making good money doing this.

Anyway, i thought i would share my take on that. Again, i’m not really endorsing the Empower Network, i’ve never done that and it sounds like a scam tbh. Nothing you cant learn at BHW for free probably.

Just my 2 cents. Enjoyable podcast. Thanks guys!

    Hi Guys,

Great podcast. More common sense advice for building our businesses. I especially liked Ana’s reminder to use social media sites to funnel traffic back to your own list. Use them to build your business, not theirs.

I think there is too much ‘noise’ out there from the ‘experts’ telling people to just get on the social sites and not enough accurate information on how to do it in a way that is most beneficial to their business. Unfortunately, this leads to people wasting their valuable time on endeavours with a low ROI.

For me, the key to dealing with ALL of the social networks that are important these days is to use well implemented automation tools. Of course, Google+ and Pinterest don’t have public APIs yet, so they are the most difficult to automate. I have only found one plugin that can do it. I am currently testing several plugins to use in possible combination with IFTTT to accomplish my goals.

I’d be interested to hear what others are using and how it’s working for them.

Until the next Sunday update …
