Note that I don’t reply to all comments, but I do read them all. If I don’t reply to your comment, it most likely means that I agree with what you say and don’t have anything meaningful to add, myself. I appreciate and read all comments and your comments play an important part in what I write about, so keep them coming.
Spammy comments are always filtered or removed. No surprise there.

I am guessing that you speciality is teaching people offsite SEO backlink building. The reason I’m guessing is because I only recently just found out about you and your site and I am continually researching sources of information on the topic of generating organic traffic that I feel very likely know what they are talking about and back it up with verifiable data etc.
“Scatterbrained” – you and me both brother! I think your specialty is providing honest (and accurate) advice about SEO. Your posts are always well researched, for example I most enjoyed the “throw money at it” topics because they were real world examples of SEO for niche marketing. You didn’t seem interested in using “tricks” to cheat Google.
Honest internet marketers are hard to come by and what we all need is somebody to cut the B.S. and tell it like it is, even if the truth hurts. That’s what you’re especially good at at, passing on the knowledge, and I always look forward to your Sunday update :)
Kind regards,
Adam
Hi Shane,
I have been following you for about two years now. There are two sides to the question, i.e. “your specialty”. I have a feeling you want us to reply in the sense of what you do. I will risk disappointing you, but for my your specialty is not what you do, it is who you are.
I consider you an honest authority and take what you say seriously. You are one of the very few people that I know “virtually” who have this status.
IMHO this is much more important than what you do – as a specialty.
Have an excellent week,
TB
Thanks for sticking around for so long! :)
I see what you mean. You’re right that it isn’t the answer I was hoping for, but that’s what makes getting input from others so valuable.
I don’t know, Shane – you’re so scatter-brained I don’t know what you really specialize in. LOL!!
But, seriously, I agree with TB. You stick out from the rest not really because of what you do but because of what you are. It’s what shines more about you.
I, too, have been on your list for more than a year (very unusual of me) and while you deliver real value to us who are following you, it’s in how you treat us that comes quite strongly for me.
Keep rockin’, dude! :)
Hi Shane
I think you do an awesome job of training, i picked up Backlink Battle Plan about 6 months ago, and was able to follow and learn from your material with great ease. Obviously your SEO is also good, other wise your training guides would be inaccurate, and your SECockpit looks to be a great product too – you promote it well. I guess being such a multi-talented guy makes your life interesting and difficult – but the thing that strikes me as probably as your best quality, is the honesty with which you go about doing business.
So long as we trust your reviews, and the way in which you go about promoting the best performing product, makes you a very valuable resource to follow and learn from.
Cheers,
Pierre
Hi Shayne…
Your expertise is definitely the ability to clearly and effectively explain the subject matter that you wish to convey.
I truly enjoy listening to you and learning.
As to your second question… as of this time, I have no website.
I had websites, and nice ones I might add, with lots of visitors… however, NO SALES!
I got disgusted and deleted everything.
I’m now in the process of retraining my brain and taking my time to learn before I jump in.
I purchased you Backlinks Battleplan and find it a great video course for learning this procedure.
Anyway, keep up the fantastic work… you’re a much needed relief in this world of scammers and thieves.
Bob
Hey Bob, thanks for your comment!
Wow, that’s pretty radical, deleting all your sites, even though they were getting traffic.
Sometimes, a radical move like that is the best way to go forward and I wish you all the best with your next attempts.
Hey Shane,
way too long since I last interacted with you on your blog but here we go with your question and my answer:
IMO Your speciality is the delivery of high-quality, didactically sophisticated content for online marketers with a focus on SEO and always delivering without any fluff.
Greetz from Germany to Romania
Mirko
Hey Mirko,
Glad to see I haven’t lost you. Thanks for your answer!
Hi Shane,
I don’t think you’ve quite asked the right question: which is What is/are your special gift(s)?
And I think the answer to that is: you have a unique abilities to:
1. bring order out of chaos, ie. to focus on a mass of data, research it, and organize it,
2. present your findings in a clear, understandable manner,
3. be perceived as being honest, authentic, and believable.
A few competitors have the first gift, far fewer have the second, and you stand virtually alone in #3.
Put them all together and you are one formidable dude!
Scatter-brained is an inappropriate way of looking at your approach. You are a serial-killer … of complex problems. :)
Best wishes,
Oran
Thank you for your reply, Oran! This one really got me thinking.
SEO!
Same as Tom…SEO!
Your speciality is to give unbiased and honest advice about Online Marketing stuff. There are very few like that out there and I appreciate what you are doing.
Hey Shane!
Been a while since I posted but I could relate to the ‘scatter brain effect’. I too like to do many different things from Local SEO to niche Marketing. Even though many things cross over there is going to be one main thing that brings in the income and that hopefully you enjoy doing.
In my opinion I would say Internet Marketing or IM Tool Reviews and more specifically Niche Marketing to me seems like your thing. Marketing is so broad that it encompasses so many different aspects of promotion including SEO and I do not see you as only an SEO guy.
Have a great weekend!
Craig
Howdy Shane
Your speciality is being honest and not dressing reviews up to keep vendors happy.
That’s a great niche to be in btw – honesty :-)
Well Shane. Your specialty is SEO. Backlink Battleplan led to SEcockpit leads to who knows what next. You have done very well, in my humble estimation, and gone much further than most of us. Making connections is one of your strong suites, both human and conceptual. The other is taking chances in offering yourself in a very public way. Obviously it is paying off.
Focus: Be patient. It comes with age. It gets harder to broadscatter the older you get. You’ll find that you’ll have to ratchet down to one campaign at the time. You’ll see.
And me. You know I’ve done nearly about all forms of IM at one time or the other. Now I’m home and happy with my strong suite, and that is teaching others Internet marketing, one on one, personally as a mentor, and making a little money while doing it. That’s my specialization, professing what I have learned. (In part thanks to YOU!)
Norm
Thanks, Norm!
Focus coming easier with age is something I hadn’t considered. I hope you’re right about it! :)
I do understand the problem of lack of focus/specialization.
I think your adding the VoteBox is a sign of lack of focus and maybe a way to figure out what you should focus on.
Your main strength lies in your communication skills. You are able to gain trust. You are able to research and learn about a subject/topic then teach others what you have learned.
Those abilities would lend themselves well to some type of coaching program. Continue providing the type of free value you provide now but find a way to bring people in for either personal or group coaching.
With me, I think it is more like a form of ADD (attention deficit disorder). I get interested in something, pursue it a while, then lose interest (often before it has a chance to pay off). I also tend to be a learner rather than an earner.
Some of that comes from perfectionitis ( I want something to be perfect before it goes public) and part comes from fear of failure. As long as I don’t go public with a project, it can’t fail, it is just unfinished.
Thank you for your reply, Doug!
I’ve had the problem with fleeting interest as well, concerning some topics.
And perfectionism is also something I always have to keep in check, so that it doesn’t prevent me from getting things done. It’s something you can harness, to do a better job than most would, but at some point, you have to be able to let go and publish a project that isn’t 100% perfect.
Communication that people can relate to based on a sound working knowledge are your strengths that I have seen through the medium of video. It’s also honest and engaging a rare things with all the BS artists out there.
My own strength you alluded to. Absolute 100% focus on getting something done and full avoidance of the bright shiny objects. best technique in the world for that is Pomodoro which is free to learn and do and is the greatest way I know to get stuff done.
Thank you for this reply, Enda!
I envy you for your focusing skill. Agree that Pomodoro is a great productivity method and everyone should give it a try, at some point.
The first thing that came to mind was: Motivation/Inspiration
The Backlink Battle Plan is great, your reviews are professional and honest.
However, I do not think that is why I follow you.
You are the only IM person that when I see an e-mail from you, I am happy and I stop what I am doing to read what are you up to. I say, oh Shane! with a smile.. :)
You bring it home to me. Your honesty and professionalism shines and you inspire me to be resiliant and to be committed to this.
You are like my coach/mentor across the world.
Thanks!
Wow, thank you very much!
Greetings From Australia,
Iam not an Internet Marketer – our company is in construction of all things ! – but l do manage our marketing; online and off line.
I follow you regularly to keep myself knowledgable : your honesty, integrity, quality and communication skills are why I always come back.
The comments above say it all – Trust – and in this world, virtual or real, this is one hell of a compliment.
Cheers
Alison
Hi Alison,
First of all: I think it’s very cool that you do marketing for a construction company. We don’t all have to work for ourselves, after all. :)
Secondly: thanks for your input!
For me your speciality is technical online entrepreneurship. At least from my point of view. Delivered in-depth with honesty and clarity.
Thank you for this reply, Liz!
Hi Shane,
I’ve always considered you to be an expert in SEO and specifically backlink building. It’s how I came across you and why I still follow you (for the most part). I also, follow you because I really like your honest style and I know I can trust you unlike most other marketers.
While I definitely would like information about website security (I just found out today one of my sites email accounts was hacked), I think you are deviating from your main focus. Security itself is a topic for specialization and it’s probably best for someone else to specialize in it.
If you were looking to expand your area of focus to beyond SEO, I would suggest to make it organic inbound marketing and it looks like you seem to be moving in that direction so I feel you are definitely on the right track with that.
Hope this helps. Thanks!
Thanks, Nisheth!
You’re right that the security topic is one that deviates from my usual focus. That’s why I’m working with someone to put together a post.
I’m not going to abandon SEO and I think that expanding to SEO plus other forms of organic traffic might be a good way to go.
Hi Shane,
I agree with Enda and couldn’t word it any better so I will quote :
“Communication that people can relate to based on a sound working knowledge are your strengths that I have seen through the medium of video. It’s also honest and engaging a rare things with all the BS artists out there.”
Your information specialty is SEO. But what makes you stand out is YOU. I feel you would be good at training beyond just SEO. I know that doesn’t help a scatter brain much but I don’t think you should limit yourself to just SEO. You are very well spoken and have a good energy behind your communication making you effective at what you do.
Thank you very much, Griz!
Hi Shane
Content Suggestion: I’d like to see an post/video on getting bounce rates down. I tried videos on the prime, above the fold, real estate but it made no difference. Currently trying out BRE.
Mike
Thanks for the suggestion, Mike!
Admittedly, a bounce-rate case study would be cool. I’ll put it on my ideas list. :)
Your skilled at many things, but I think your speciality is engendering trust.
Your speciality is no more complicated than your ‘insight’ and a willingness to admit your weaknesses as much as your successes. I see you as someone who is very open, aware, very perceptive of people and most people who come into contact with you will be impressed with your intelligence. They will believe you are successful even though you are not as ‘successful’ as you would like to be. I think you have many personal or internal battles which only manifest themselves in your quiet times and, luckily for us, in these videos you make for us (which provide a wonderful outlet for you). You are a man of a 1000 fantastic ideas each of which is so fantastic you never know which one to focus on first (or even last for that matter). Your ability to analyze, be systematic, logical (when you can devote the time to it) opens the door to the world of computing, programming, systems (which you find easy), but internet marketing provides more challenges which leave you searching in the dark more often than not. Your intelligence frequently tells you that you ‘can’ although many times there’s no one to ask or the necessary tools aren’t always at hand. But battle on you will because you know you ‘can’ and have incredible underlying self-belief. You’re attracted to internet marketing because you know that’s where the money is, but marketing was not something you told your parents you wanted to get into when you were younger. You are, for sure, one of the good guys, but in the end you are just like everyone one of us that reads your blog and watches your videos every week. You’ve had a bit more success than most of us, but there’s an underlying honesty and sincerity in your videos that compels us to watch every week. Never mind how much money you make, those are great qualities. Carry on.
Me, I’m just like you!
Dude, are you inside my head or something?
That’s some pin-point accuracy in that assessment of yours!
Thanks, i had to laugh at Michael’s comment re astrology below!
I think it’s incredible just how perceptive people can be simply by looking at a face, hearing a voice or listening to someone’s words.
Hi Shane,
I would say on a base level you have one of the best video skills I’ve seen online. You could do well writing an ebook about making the best videos with recommendations on the camera equipment, lighting and sound.
On a second level the reason your videos come off so well is that you have a gift of teaching. You are a good teacher. Clear and Concise.
Third, you are honest. And, believe me if you’re not you certainly fake it well! I know you make money but you don’t come across as “in it to make the money”.
I’ve read so many blogs and watched countless videos on internet marketing but when I met you, I stopped watching everyone else. I came upon one of your videos online as I was researching SENuke X. I then changed my mind and went for Magic Submitter instead.
Why? Because of the 3 points I stated above. And, fourth you’re easy on the eyes too :-)
Anyway, you are video making expert, now if you take that and combine it with SEO then you would be the SEO Expert on Video marketing, in my opinion. You need to get into Video Marketing and I am sure you’d clean up the market on that one!
Thanks, Nicole!
Doing more on video marketing is one of those topics that’s been on my to-do list for ages… since it’s also a decently popular suggestion in the Votebox, I think it’s something I really need to get to, sooner rather than later.
Shane,
I think it is not a weird thing that you have a problem with focusing and want to know and to do many things at the same time. In my opinion, this happens because your specialty in its “hardcore” is teaching others. From here you have a desire to learn about many things and then offer your knowledge for free or as a paid product and your website is direct evidence of that direction.
I totally agree with Olga, you are a natural coach/mentor type of person and this is your way to go…
Good luck Shane,
Alexander.
Thanks, Alexander! I always appreciate your input.
Hi Shane,
I have always enjoyed your content best when you are doing case studies. They are very detailed and a cut above 99.9% of what is available out there. I wouldn’t even mind reading about case studies that failed – at least it should save me some money from repeating them.
Good point.
I’d have no problem with publishing a failed case-study, either.
You’ll be happy to hear that I’m currently conducting another large-scale test, which will result in a review/case study combination type of post.
seo, off page seo is what you need from you ..
Your specialty – Helping people build a business
My Specialty – Not listening to you enough
Shane,
First thing that pops in my head…
SEO Expert Instructor…with a desire to teach others.
It’s easy to become an expert at anything,
it’s totally another to be able to teach it!
Since meeting you and Sam, I’ve enjoyed following you
both and using SECockpit!
For me…I love to motivate and teach!
Thanks for wanting to help others!
Burt
Hey Burt,
Thanks for leaving a comment!
I hope we can meet up sometime again. It was awesome, hanging out with you guys!
SECockpit
A tremendous product that has the potential leader in the Keyword niche and recurring monthly membership income beats everything else online.
Focus on promoting SEcockpit and the ancillary services. You are a great marketer and using this blog to funnel readers to SEcockpit is a brilliant strategy. It worked with me and many others. Just don’t get caught up spending too much time here. Just keep over delivering here as you have always done and building trust and people will continue to sign on to SEcockpit. Some people teach marketing – you model it.
Hi Charles,
You make a good point. I really could focus on SECockpit only and there would be enough for me to do. But I just itch for doing more than that.
Shane
It would come as no surprise to find you blushed while reading those responses. One cannot buy such genuine respect and admiration for a consistently unhyped marketer who thinks and delivers to his client base. You are a generalist. An admirable position to hold in a more and more specialised world. How about becoming a publishing house agent where you JV with other product designers. Using your natural instinct for integrity as your point of difference.
Hi Colin,
That’s a really interesting suggestion. I’ve never thought about this as an option.
Although recently, I have been spending more time looking for collaboration opportunities and partnerships.
G’day Shane
Your honesty is your “Hook” and in this IM business full of sharks, we are happy to take your bait. Honesty is a nice bait BTW.
For me, your specialty is as a “SEO Traffic Controller”.
You provide good product reviews/comparisons, courses, and whatever SEO information is required to help others achieve their online goals by increasing traffic and in turn sales.
Your Backlink Battleplan is the reason many are breaking through and creating an income online. Your commitment to keeping this up to date, as you are, is crucial. Everyone should have this course. Building sites is easy. Traffic is another thing.
I look to you to keep me informed about changes and trends on the internet which in turn will influence how my sites perform. I for one, am happy to rely on you to tell me if something is good or it sucks, then make a recommendation and, provided it fits my business model, I will buy it through your links every time. You have earned that trust.
Provide specialized SEO solutions which help others succeed and we will all benefit financially. Making money is why we are all here.
In my opinion, the “Security” issue is a sidetrack, is not your specialty, and doesn’t need to be either.
Hi Shane,
Having read through the posts above, I wonder if Chris should develop a personal assessment business as a second string to his Golf business? Something like a cross between astrology and a life coaching review business!
I think we know what you have focused on to date, and many have rightly given you feedback on what we believe your qualities to be, but I would like to add a quote from Dan Kennedy which may give you pause for thought – and you seem to be walking that path whether you are conscious of it or not:
“Its not what you do, nor what media you use that creates wealth, it’s about doing what you do for the right WHO., and being recognised by them as the right WHO. And the higher up the scale you go it is not what you do that you get paid for, it is for being who you are.
Real achievement is always based on implementation of sound fundamentals.”
This of course can lead you or any of us to go off at a tangent and try and be everything to everyone – so your emphasis on FOCUS is very important – a lesson I have to remind myself about constantly.
But I would suggest that you scroll out for a moment and take a look at the big picture. Perhaps this is best described by Mike Markkula – Co-Founder of Apple inc.
“You should never start a company with the goal of getting rich. Your goal should be in making something you believe in and making a company that will last.”
Markkula was Apple’s fist serious investor and was already a successful entrepreneur when he invested. However, he is a strategist and he also developed Apple’s Marketing Philosophy – which at one stage in its development was obviously forgotten, but brought back by Steve Jobs’ return.
I think we can all learn something from what he scribbled and what became Apples’ Philosophy:
EMPATHY: We will truly understand our customers’ needs better than any other company.
FOCUS: In order to do a good job of those things we decide to do, we must eliminate all unimportant opportunities.
IMPUTE: People do judge a book by its cover. If our story is exceptional, then we will ensure that our presentation is equally outstanding.
In my case, I am building a local marketing business focusing on generating marketing leads for local businesses. I have spent 3 years building a focused vacation rental business. This latter business is pretty much running itself now and I shall be spending the next three years building the local marketing business.
Many thanks for your help.
Michael
That is some excellent input, Michael. Thank you very much for this!
Shane, thanks for the helpful information links.
You know that I have followed you just about from the beginning of my online journey, nearly two years ago – I think in the fast changing internet world, that really says something because you just keep on delivering great, useful and timely information – and you have the wonderful gift of being able to deliver it in a way that never sounds patronising, is concise, clear and easy to understand.
You also have the trust of those who follow you so that (in my case anyway), even if I do not understand all the technicalities of a subject if you recommend a product or a method, I am more likely to try it, if you raise red flags about a product or method, I will definitely steer well clear!
To me, your great gift is, finding out what people need and providing it – “simples”!
clear message
Hi, Shane
I know you for the mentions of your SECockpit in VitaVee’s forum. The first time I checked your SECockpit, I just feel it is too advanced for me. While the second time I checked, I see how great SECockpit is. You catch other Keyword research tools’ weekness and the best is you make a new tool to out rank others and meet the future demand.
The next is I just want to try see other products you created and see how good it is. After I read the SEO rich content guide, I feel that this is the best Onpage SEO guide. You cover all aspects and express it very clearly and lovely with the most less words. Amazing!
Also also all your products come with a video. It is normal, but you make it high quality and make it very tight and shore time. Very professional and trust worth. You make your audiences trust you very much.
Another cool thing you do is make your reviews very honest and useful. Recommend something and don’t recommend it with your clear attitude. I know few people also do good reviews like this, you make it more better to trust.
In video you said yourself, you are not so focused. But good thing is that you seems have the ability to do more things better at the same time. Also In fact all the thing you do is normal in a large focus I think. That’s your talent and hard-working make it happen.
For most people, in fact it is always true that, people always grow up from non-specialization to specialization. The earlier you specialized in something or area, the sooner you will you get you want.
Hi Shane –
You are a natural-born speaker/educator, surprised you haven’t been invited on TED yet… :) !
You seem to have a natural style that makes people ‘believe’ in what you preach.. its probably because you come across as someone who would never use or recommend something without trying/testing it themselves first.
To me your expertise is SEO and specifically niche/affiliate marketing. But I am sure you could apply yourself to anything… that interested you.
As others have mentioned, what sets you apart is your ability or even willingness to take the time to provide an in-depth honest critique of SEO products/methods out there.
Personally… I am working on specialising and getting ‘skilled’ at SEO/online marketing.
John
To echo the others, your honesty and integrity is what sets you apart from most others out there in guruland.
But is that your speciality, or just part of your personality?
What keeps me coming back is the way you break down vague theoretical concepts and pull out the pertinent points for us.
If I decide I need to learn about such athing, or develop a desire for some sort of SEO tool I always check what you have to say on it first.
From a selfish point of view I’d like to see you continue to specialise in SEO, which is surely a broad enough topic to content you for a while! ?-)
Hello Shane,
I was introduced to your training last week by a fellow-marketer. I’m new to this online world, with only a few months under my belt. Whilst I know I have been lucky, so far, in that I have not fallen into any horrible traps or scams, and have generally been on the right path information-wise, the source/presentation of my information was often chaotic and confusing. So, when I first watched your videos, I was blown-away by your quiet, calm & measured presentation-style, coupled with comprehensive yet simple explanations of what I feel are complex subjects.
You are an excellent teacher! Your honesty comes across immediately (I consider myself a good judge of people), which in itself is a huge asset for you and an invaluable bonus for the rest of us.
I hope you appreciate yourself as much as we all seem to appreciate you.
I am looking forward to my long, steep learning curve, coupled with a happy and prosperous association with you – my guide.
Cheers!
I see your Knowledge specialty as “Internet Marketing” – but that’s an unfair judgement since I haven’t seen any other side of you. Your Skills are obviously in “teaching”.
I love that you’re “scattered”… It gives me hope in my biz ventures. :)
Seriously.. I love that fact that you’re out there running the gauntlet of internet marketing a few steps in front of us. Similar to a scout.
You let us know what truly works and what doesn’t. And in the world of IM, it’s extremely hard to find trustworthy info about something even as small as whether or not a product actually works.
Keep on trailblazing <— Your Specialty.
Shane,
Whenever I am reading about a new back linking, keyword, or niche method I ask myself what does Shane suggest and does SECockpit already cover this “new” method. Each time I read a post you write or listen to a blog or webinar you produce, I am convinced your specialty is the essence of SEO – generating targeted traffic. Alpha – Omega, it begins and ends with your teaching.
The fact that you feel you are scatterbrained simply reinforces their is hope for me yet!
Cheers,
Rick
Hi Shane
I have only been following you for a few months. To answer your question I believe you to be an SEO expert but you have the knack of making it appear simple and that is what it is all about really. With so much info on the internet it is easy to get confused. You also have an articulate way of teaching. So to summarise, you are an articulate internet marketer, specialising in SEO and keeping it simple
Best Regards
Max
I totally agree with Oran Kangas and couldn’t word it any better so I will quote :
“you have a unique abilities to:

Hey Shane – good question!
My response is: You are in the Communication Business.
You have excellent communication skills and explain SEO, etc extremely well. As well, or better than anyone else I’ve found.
You could be communicating about anything, not just SEO – that’s why I say you are in the Communication Business.
It’s like the story of Canadian Pacific who wanted to expand. Most everyone in the company thought they were in the railroad business.
But then someone saw the light. The business they were really in was “Transportation”.
Once they saw this the possibilities for diversifying into serving other areas of transportation other than railways immediately became clear. My guess is they became clearer on running a railroad business too!
Hope this helps. Keep up the good work – you are constantly inspiring.
with kindness,
Leo
In short, Shane, I feel you are an SEO expert. Specifically, you have an above-average grasp of promoting niche-based content on the Internet.
Personally, knowledge of a niche and being able to profit from it on the Internet are mutually exclusive. If I was to say, I would put 20% knowledge, and 80% online marketing expertise. Those that can detach themselves from the niche topic, and focus on tasks, are the ones that make it online. Tasks, I’m referring to how to do KW research, how to write the content for SEO, and how to market the content.
Shane,
Teaching to clarify aand simplify. Probably anything you set your mind to, but in this context SEO and online marketing.
