Question of the week: What would it take for you to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that what you’re doing online can be expanded into a successful, full-time business?
Thanks for watching and as always, I look forward to your input and comments!
Cheers,
![]()

I’ve already expanded my online efforts into a full-time business. I just need to see increases in traffic and revenue to convince me beyond a shadow of doubt that my efforts are paying off.
Hey Shane,
Before I answer your “question of the week” I feel that I just need to thank you again for one of if not THE best webinar I´ve ever been attending so far (And due to my nosey nature I´ve been on way too many :-). The background information about your business approach and about your very own journey in the IM world, where you come from and where you are heading was both extremely interesting and exciting.
I´m only following you and your work since a couple of weeks now but I am 100% sure that finally I´ve found the kind of person I´ve always been looking for in the IM world. Authentic, caring, likeable, fabulous and outstanding product creating, funny, witty and different are just a few words that pop into my mind when I try to describe Shane Melaugh. The impact that you want to make is already taking place! Your stuff is different and boy, am I glad that it is!
Alright enough praise, your question of the week: I´ve been on a wild ride through a lot of different alleys in our IM world and I´ve seen a couple of things of which I am absolutely positive that they work. One of these things is driving traffic to webpages by applying SEO strategies. I´m a happy user of backlink battleplan and I´ve seen tremendous movements of sites I applied the strategies on – all the way up to the No. 1 spot of Google´s SERPs. Therefore I absolutely agree with you that it is a rather annoying fact that especially some of those high ticket courses want you to believe that “the old stuff” isn´t working anymore.
Thanks a million for all the great stuff you are pumping out like a mad-man and get some rest today!
Talk to you soon
Mirko
P.S. You special offer is awesome! Just a few weeks ago I realized that the plugin (Pretty Link) I´d been using for link-cloaking and tracking so far doesn´t work in its full extent anymore in the free version. The paid version is 97 USD so your offer is just a complete no-brainer! THANX
Hi Shane,
Well to start off, I know that IM does work. I have had some small success with PPC, but would rather focus on SEO. I feel with PPC, you can lose a lot of money, real fast!
Currently, I’m building my sites based on SEO and for me to know “Without a Shadow of a Doubt”, that what I’m doing does & will work, would be to build a site that is successful and makes me money. Next, build a 2nd & 3rd site (all in different niches) and they too were successful!
At that point, I then would feel confident in my knowledge and the applying of such knowledge.
[I’ve heard say, that the traffic is the easy part? Build links and the traffic will come? The harder part is the conversion of the traffic?]
Would you say this is true based on your experienced?
“Thanks again for the weekly video, I really enjoy them!”
Best,
Clifton
Thanks for your input.
I wouldn’t say that conversions are more difficult to get than traffic. It’s just one more thing one needs to learn about.
Much of it depends heavily on the chosen keywords, as well. Some keywords just won’t convert, no matter what you do. That’s why it’s so important to do good keyword research before investing time and money into a SEO campaign.
Hello Shane,
Thanks again for the update. Yes, I know for a fact that Backlink Battleplan is THE top SEO formula out there. This comes after having spent a few hundred bucks learning the ropes from this one and that one over the last year and a half. More, BLBP is far more concise than all the hints and tips that I paid good money for from the people who I considered to be tops in the SEO racket before I ran across you, (And Andy of EZSEO.)
But, and here is the but thing. I’m pretty confident now, with what I already knew and old BLBP in my back pocket that getting good search engine placement is something I don’t have to worry about.
While my strategies have placed my links near the front…and even at the top in many cases, I have to wonder where are the clicks?? And past that, where are the conversions. I have three or four sets of links in place that ought to be doing Godzilla biz, but hits and conversions are just flat. I don’t know if it’s the economy or what. These are not silly long tail losers either. I also have some losers, and some that ought to be generating more than they do. I’m talking travel, dieting, and even a fair doggy site. All the things you’re supposed to stay away from. I just couldn’t resist the challenge.
And I have one site I’ll share with you that got a mess load of hits…and will again, as it is seasonal, but is one I can’t figger out what to put on there that will sell. It’s very frustrating. It’s GrapeJelly.org. #2 on ol Goog for the keyword “grape jelly.” It seemed like a good idea at the time. Ha. (It’s a silly site, but fun.)
I keep thinking that there is one teensy little piece of the puzzle that I’m missing here. If I could just lock onto it, then things would start to pay off. As I said above, placement isn’t the issue now. Product and or presentation or something I’m overlooking is. But what??!
Lastly, what I have noticed is that without a doubt, placing well on Yahoo and Bing means nothing. Zip. It’s hateful Google that sends 98% of the traffic. I wish it were not so.
Thanks again Shane. I always enjoy your superb vids and leadership.
Norm
Hmm.. I’d say it’s either a case of bad data when you do keyword research (i.e. the traffic volumes you see aren’t correct) or a case of conversions being bad.
If it’s keyword data, then you’re getting no traffic, despite good rankings.
If it’s conversions, then your content isn’t getting people to click where you want them to click.
That’s actually the better scenario, since all you need to do then is get some split-testing going.
Okay, not that split-testing is really simple to do, but it’s a great option for increasing conversions.
Hi Shane,
Firstly i also loved the webinar!! it was brilliant. Just what people need.. A webinar which lets us see behind your methods and practices, not only that but no sales or even a hint of another angle apart from the one you openly discuss..
I am sure that all here will agree with your openness as well as your masterplan.. I most certainly find benefit from your information you provide as well as knowing that the seo and BBP works.. Just a matter of applying it..
As a suggestion Would a time lapse seo study help people. As in 1. begin date, site registered
2. Content added to site
3. Seo campaign begins
4. starting to rank
5. rank improving
and so on.. I know this may take time but i think if people saw this for their own eyes then they may get more productive..
Just my 2 pennys..
Chris.
Hi Chris,
Yes, I agree: A case-study where you can see the exact steps taken would be really helpful.
It’s something I want to do, at some point, but haven’t gotten around to, so far.
The only problem with it is that it’s very time-intensive to create a case-study like this.
Shane, I don’t know what it would take for me to really believe in success other than to say, seeing people like yourself who are ‘walking the walk’ not just ‘talking the talk’ in whom I can believe – that’s what keeps me pegging away! I am making slow progress towards what I hope will (one day) be a full-time income. I think I have learned a lot and am investing all I make (and a bit more) back into the ‘business’. PS, I really enjoyed the webinar, sorry I had to leave before the end of question time but it was great!
Hi Shane,
Great Thoughtful question! Does this stuff work for you? I really needed to think about it before i could answer the question. I have recently started in IM and have signed up couple of clients for SEO and few other negotiations are in progress. I have had great results with website rankings for my clients using your Backlink Battleplan. From my experience, i believe that building backlinks with anchor text is THE most important thing in getting better rankings. Some previous courses i did, which costed me around $2000 (the standard IM price) was a great overview of different strategies of SEO but they were extremely brief on HOW TO BUILD BACKLINK. I was looking for a strategy to do it and i was disappointed by that and hence the only i was getting backlinks was by outsourcing it (manual blog commenting, social bookmarking) & costing me money without any income. but your BB was the best investment i have in terms of SEO . Thanks for that. SInce i have started following BB strategies i have seen CLEAR IMPROVEMENT in my website rankings. As far as i am concerned, i am beyond the shadow of doubt it works. But i am not too confident about conversion. That is how do i get a client to do what i want him to do once he gets on the page. Landing Page Optimization. It will be great if you can come up with a product or a strategy to create great conversion conversion strategies. Also, i really like your videos. They look highly professional. way better than youtube. Can you tell me how you make them? What tools or softwares, etc ?
Thanks a lot .. will be going through your webinar now.
cheers
Chirag
I agree to previous opinions: there is BLBP, simple, works, and you don’t need to pay for resources, if you don’t want to and it is a whole strategy, not only an expensive tool you don’t know how to use.
I am working very hard and really long hours to make my way, and hopefully fairly soon I can make a normal income with it.
I did have doubts, especially, when I started to realize that this is not just some kind of hobby. IM is a serious profession but it is still more an empiric trial and error thing. And that is a point many are struggling with and giving up once you see, how much work needs to be done to squeeze even only a few bucks out of it.
So, for me to make me confident to pursue what I do further on, it would be the fact that I would know I can convince people to trust my expertise and finally buy what they would find amongst my offers.
Hi Shane,
I woke up at 5am to be in your webinar but I got the wrong time conversion so I went back into bed until 6am. It was without a ‘shadow of a doubt’ a very very good webinar. It found it very refreshing to the principles that govern your business model 1) To work harder and smarter than anyone (sleep is over-rated right?) and 2) To have an impact on the niche. I feel you will do that.
I personally want a system that can be automated after I’ve put in the leg work. I don’t mind testing but I would like to know that I have a method to get traffic, keep customers and convert them to a sale or two before I ramp it up.
Btw, I just want you say damn you Shane, damn you for introducing an offer like GhostURL excatly at the same time as I was looking for such a service that caters for my needs at a ridiculously low price. Are you in my marketing head or something?? I’ll be happy to give you feedback.
Question: How is a cloaked link like Ghost Url different to a top level domain redirect. Could I use it in Ezine articles??
I am going through your Backlink Battle Plan and will give you feedback for it. I’m not sure how you will top Backlink Battle Plan but Backlink Warmachine sounds awesome…
warm regards
Samith
Hey Samith,
Yeah, as a surprising number of people on the webinar agreed: Sleep IS overrated! :)
Automation is definitely the way to go. For me, the most important kinds of automation are automatic product delivery and automatic follow-ups.
For traffic generation, I believe ousourcing is the way to go, to make it automatic.
GhostURL only works on your own site, so it can’t be used on something like Ezinearticles. On the one hand, I’m tempted to find a way around that, but on the other hand, I bet it wouldn’t last very long, if we found a loophole and lots of people started using it (EZA don’t like affiliate links one bit…).
I would say I have reached the point where I believe in what I am doing but I still truly have to come to terms with focussing on one thing to get some regular income.
The webinar was great because it gave us a strong insight into the man behind the strange accent.
Now I am off to check out the link.
I too loved your webinar and got a lot of useful data from it.
I now have a plan where I do not have to “build a list”. I got burned with a product where I paid aweber for over a year to get five names on my list. Of course there was a lot of very general
SEO that did not move my site at all in the rankings. So I see “building a list” as a step to be done after your site gets on page 1 of Google. Aweber actually wound up costing me more than the original course that I bought. It was a learning experience!
Getting a site to page 1 on Google would allow me to realize I can eventually make a success of this.
Hi Shane,
your “Ghost URL” offer is very interesting. I still have a question: Is it really possible with Ghost URL to create Top-Level-Domain-Affiliate-Links without having this domain? I mean, do I need to buy extra domains if I want to create an affiliate link looking like http://www.mysite.com?
Regards,
Waldemar
Yes, as long as the link is on your own site, it can point to any URL you want (even a made-up one).
But it doesn’t work on other sites like article directories.
Ok, thanks. Just to be sure: So as long as the links are on my website, I can link to http://www.dogtrainingguide.com without buying this domain and ghost url will redirect by clicking on this link to the affiliate website? Will the visitor still seeing this url in the address bar or will he see the url of the affiliate website after that redirection?
Regards,
Waldemar
Yes, that’s correct. After the click, the actual URL will show up in the address bar.
Hi Shane
You mentioned a link to I think it was a video series on creating free giveaway products. I think maybe you were going to link to it here under the video. Please would you be able to pop that link up I would really like to access that training :) Many thanks
Lynne
Oops, looks like I forgot to add that one!
Thanks for pointing it out. Here’s the link.
TY Shane :)
Shane,
Trying to get an idea of the difference between ghost url and the others, so what looks like is different is the ability to make the link http://yoursite.com, but obviously there was a reason to create the software otherwise you strike me as the guy who whould say why bother. What is better about Ghost Url vs pretty link or maxblogpress ninja affiliate plugin?
Hi Alan,
That is the main difference. There’s also an issue with redirects and getting cookies set properly in IE8, which affects most link cloaking tools. Ghost URL will always get your cookie set properly, not matter which browser is used by the visitors.
Apart from that, we simply want to offer the best link cloaking tool at the best price. It’s part of a “toolbox” for online marketers that Sam and I are working on. Not all of these tools will be completely revolutionary, we simply want to offer great, useful tools.
So, if you already have a link cloaking tool and you’re happy with it an the results you’re getting, then you might not need Ghost URL. But for anyone who doesn’t have a link cloaker yet, this is the perfect one to get. :)
Beyond a shadow of a doubt I know I will at least double my profits next year (as i have done this year and last year).
How I will do that? I don’t know. I’ve got many ideas. I’ve found out I do have to test 10 different strategies. 9 of those strategies will not work out very well. However, the one strategy that does work will generate the extra cash.
How to indentify that one strategy? Don’t have a clue.
Sounds good. :)
I think you’ve already described how to find that one thing that works: Keep testing. (that’s how I do it, anyway)
Shane, please make the webinar download available in mp4 format. It’s easier for me to listen on the drive to and from the office, rather than sit at the computer for 2 hours.
Hi Richard,
Do you mean mp3 – audio format?
That’s something I could look into providing.
Thank you Shane for that great video and for the chance to get GhostURL at such good price.
Mirko Gosh expressed how I feel so well, I’m borrowing his words:
“Authentic, caring, likeable, fabulous and outstanding product creating, funny, witty and different are just a few words that pop into my mind when I try to describe Shane Melaugh. The impact that you want to make is already taking place! Your stuff is different and boy, am I glad that it is!”
To answer your question “beyond a shadow of a doubt” I am disappointed in my progress this year and I’ve been kicking the only one I have to blame ‘MYSELF’… I started the year with a plan to focus on publishing reports, ebooks in many different forms besides maintening my blog that would tie in with at least some of the stuff I would publish. So what did I end up doing?
scattering my efforts trying this and following that …
So it’s back to sticking to a plan for the coming year.
Thanks for the link about free giveaway products … that is the path I want to follow.
Fran
Don’t be too hard on yourself.
It can be difficult to stick with one’s plans. I, for one, accumulate about a hundred failures for every one of my successes.
Make it routine to pick yourself up, refocus and get going again. Don’t judge.
Shane,
I’ve just finished watching the webinar recording and am just sorry I got the timing wrong on Friday night because I wish I’d been on for the live show and the Q & A after it cut off – I read the gotomeeting message wrong and thought it was 5pm GMT, duh!
But the webinar, well what is there to say apart from I love your complete honesty with everything you say, and you don’t hold back on pumping out great and highly valuable knowledge and tips.
I’ve been on so many webinars over the last few years, where so called ‘gurus’ say they are going to tell you their biggest secret to success only to find out they hold back the key to the lock which they never intended to open in the first place!
You always show the lock and then give your followers the right key to open it.
Thank you.
– Andy.
PS:-
After applying the BBP strategy to several sites over the last 5 weeks, I am starting to see results and conversions into regular daily commissions.
These results have see some pages go from ranking #500 in Google, up to #9, 3 and position #1 for several different keywords.
Xmas is looking good now, financially.
Thank you again.
Thank you very much, Andy!
Let me just say: Congratulations on sticking with BBP for long enough to see these results!
Seriously, pat yourself on the back for that. The best system in the world is only as good as the person using it and it’s often the implementation part where things go awry…
So, well done. I’m thrilled to hear about this success. :)
Hi Shane,
Question of the week: What would it take for you to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that what you’re doing online can be expanded into a successful, full-time business?
***************************************************************
In 2006 & 2007 I had a full-time desk job and at night & on weekends, was writing ebooks & creating videos and selling them only on the Warrior Forum as WSO’s. I was making more money from my WSO’s than I was at my day job, which I was sick of.
So, in March 2007 I quit my day job and went into Internet Marketing full time. Well guess what happened around the end of 2007? The economy here in the U.S. fell apart, the recession started and sales slowed down, competition on the WSO forum increased, they started charging us $20 to launch a WSO and prices of WSO’s dropped like a rock down to $4, $5, & $7!!!
It became tough to make any decent income and the worst financial crisis of my life became a reality in 2008, 2009 & 2010.
My last 3 years have been a nightmare combined with depression and anxiety even though I stopped selling WSO’s and went into providing SEO services and backlinks about one year ago.
I’ve made some good income doing SEO but it has been sporadic and not regular or residual income. Some months are very good and some are very bad. If a client stops ordering services, well guess what happens to my income?
I’m not doing something right because I’m always struggling to make enough money to pay the bills.
I’m darn good at SEO and have gotten 5 different websites to #1 in Google for multiple keywords each but yet I’m still struggling financially. It sucks!
Top-SEO service providers earn up to $300.00 an hour for full-blown SEO and $100.00 is what a lot of guys are charging yet I don’t even earn half of that and I’ve got a track record of successes and screenshots & testimonials to prove it.
My problem is that I’m so busy trying to scrape up enough money to pay the bills that I can’t find the time to work on the other things I need to be doing to find better & more clients and raise my prices.
Anyway, enough of that crap. The moral of my story is that I thought that I could expand what I was doing online into a fulltime business but the recession happened and my business fell apart.
Admittedly it wasn’t entirely the fault of the recession. I waste a LOT of time, lose my focus, try to learn new ways to make money (test) when I’m online and my depression and anxiety have made it hard for me to work too.
I remember when I was launching WSO’s and doing a couple of joint ventures and earning $1,000.00 in 24 hours and $2,000 in a week, I was unstoppable! I earned around $7,700.00 on one of my ebooks, just from WSO sales! I was on top of the world and nothing would get me down. I was on a roll! I was on the ride of my life.
I want to get back to feeling unstoppable! I’m not sure I know how to now. Bad times have destroyed that feeling.
I highly recommend to you folks reading this that you do not quit your regular job and go into IM fulltime until you’re making a lot more than you do at your day job and have AT LEAST 6 months worth of savings in the bank to save you if you hit a dry spell. Just don’t quit your day job!
That’s the moral of my story.
Good luck to you all.
Hi Jimmy,
Thanks for your reply.
Could it be that there is some kind of a mindset or self-sabotage issue at hand, here? Seems like you would have all the assets to make this work for you, but are struggling nonetheless.
There may be a recession going on, but it’s still very much possible to make the kind of money you are talking about. Maybe difficult if you focus on the WSO forum ONLY, but it’s definitely possible…
Shane I am really appreciating what you do, I have worked through the battleplan, it was hard work but a side effect was having to concentrate so hard gave me a more focused mind with more determination.
Now other tasks do not seem so daunting. The results are already showing through with my page rising noticeably in Google.
Hi Mark,
Cool! You’re right that staying focused can be very challenging. Especially with this “distraction machine” called the internet around…
Hi,
I was loving GhostUrl but I just discovered what appears to be a huge problem.
If you right-click on a link, then open in a new window, GhostUrl DOES NOT WORK!
Is there a fix for this?
If not, I’ll need to find another plugin. :(
Thanks.
I’ve replied to the Warrior Forum thread. Please contact us on our helpdesk for further information. Thanks!
