If you’re ever in need of a product name…

Question of the Week:
Do you do your IM work on a clear schedule? Why/why not?

Cheers,

  • Work on a daily basis. Put in as many hours as I can for maximum productivity.

Reason is at the starting, I believe one has to invest tons and tons of hours, if the person doesn’t have capital (startup money) to invest in, at least.

    • That’s very true, in my experience. It does take a big upfront investment to make a business work.

However, I’ve also found that investing too much time every day can be counter-productive, as you’ll often get more done if you put time-restraints on yourself.

  • By the way, I do not recommend picking a product name using my “formula”…

I do not work on a schedule. Have tried some “systems” but I’ve always dropped them very quickly. Maybe I just don’t like to restrict myself… Or I’m very bad at restricting myself like that. I could need a time management system of some sorts, though.

    • What? There are some awesome names in there! “WSO Profit Massacre”? I’d totally buy that. :D

Well, I’d probably buy it and then make fun of it, to be honest.

I’m not very good at putting myself on a schedule either, but I make myself do it because it works out in my favour.

  • I had about 20 YT accounts closed about 2 years ago, some because of the nature of the channel (MLM) and several for no apparent reason. It sucks, but it happens and most of the time, you can’t get your channel back.

It even happened to one of my first mentors, but get this…

He had 100+ videos teaching people how to use YT videos to build a leads list. They canceled his account for no apparent reason and would not re-instate it.

The general consensus was that teaching someone how to use YT videos to get leads could reduce Googles Adwords revenue, by people switching from Adwords to videos!

    ===============

I always make a schedule at the end of each day, ready for the next. A list of ‘to dos’ etc.

    Andy

    • Ouch, 20 accounts all at once?

It’s really annoying, but I guess it comes with the territory. Any free service, free blog, free whatever is always at a certain risk, as long as it’s provided and hosted by someone else.

  • Schedule? Hell yes, no schedule = chaos whereas schedule = managed chaos.

Crudely prioritise high value activity ie writing, for the morning and admin/spinning/article submission/routine anything for the afternoon.

    :-)

    • I have a similar setup, actually. I work on projects and products in the morning and focus more on SEO and other routine tasks in the afternoons.

  • Yes, a schedule would be nice. I am still climbing the learning curve mountain.
    It is getting easier.

    • It is quite a mountain, but let’s say: the view is worth the climb. :D

  • Hi Shane,

A schedule is a must in order to get work done effectively. With more work to do now, I have come to realize this and am trying my best to become more organized and I sure see better results. I like what Alex said: no schedule = chaos whereas schedule = managed chaos. True.

    Cheers
    Rema

    • It can be pretty difficult to get organized without a “boss” or any rules to stick to. But yeah: it does help with getting better results.

  • WTF is WSO – lol, good one.
Looking forward to the Webinar. From what I’ve heard, I could really use the SECockpit keyword tool.

Schedule… I try to work on a schedule, can’t say I have a fixed one though.
I just try to follow the Backlink Battleplan (which by the way Shane, is going pretty good – got to the top 5 for one keyword and I’m seeing improvement for my other ones as well. Just needed a bit more patience I guess), finish what I think is more urgent and complete so and so hours of work per day. The most important part I’d say is keeping the tasks organised. My advice – Get Mindjet’s MindManager or another software of that kind.

    • Congrats on the top 5 ranking! Getting from there to #1 can be tough, but at least you’ll already be getting some traffic on the way there.

I’ll check out MindJet, thanks for the tip!

  • I block out times when to work and stick to it. Otherwise I would be playing BBC2 all day long.

Yea, Yahoo, is off on backlinks. I have submitted a whole lot of articles and videos and my backlinks are pathetic. The cool thing is I just got to page 1 on a keyword, so that is cool, maybe they are not registering.

Ever think about doing training when it comes to squeeze pages, and sales copy on websites? That is one area I would like to work on more.

    • Yahoo will only get worse concerning backlinks, because the site explorer is officially going bye-bye. I think it will be taken offline in 2012. I should do a blog-post about this and what it means for SEO.

Sales-copy and squeeze-page copy is something that I still need to gather a lot of experience with myself. I’m really not a good copywriter (yet), but I’m working on it.
Once I feel I have found my groove (and have the conversion numbers to prove it), I’ll definitely share what I’ve learnt. In the form of blog posts, videos or a product, depending on how far I want to take it. :)

      • I find myself turning to http://www.majesticseo.com more and more often for backlink info. Especially love the historical link acquisition and trend graphs. Also the new search engine http://www.blekko.com has surprisingly deep SEO info just one click away. I certainly am ready for Yahoo SiteExplorer to fade into the sunset.

      • Majestic is very cool, specifically for the historical link report.
Blekko has some potential. I wonder if it’s going to replace YSE, eventually. Right now, it seems to me that A) the index is pretty small and B) the results are still off, oftentimes. When I do link-searches on Blekko, I often find completely unrelated sites that don’t contain any backlinks to my target site.

  • Hi Shane,

I have only recently set up a schedule for me to work on for each website. For me it brings order from chaos.. Prior to this i didn’t have clear direction as well as knowing what needs to be done next in order to complete all of my backlinking steps.

Now i have my schedule typed out i have my SEO effors organised and know where i am in regard my promotions for each page etc…

    • I’ve also found that it’s quite important to keep tabs on your SEO efforts. Once you’re promoting many different pages for many different keywords, things can get very messy, otherwise.

  • Hi Shane, sorry to hear about all the ‘gremlins’ in the works this week and especially sorry to hear about the youtube account – very annoying!
My schedule is broadly that I follow a spreadsheet similar to the one in $100k blueprint for article writing, article spinning, article submission, other link building and website promotion. I try and do stuff like keyword research when I am not tired and social bookmarking when I am!
I agree that the work always stretches to fill the time available so I like to set myself an amount of time to get a task done and if I have any time left over, reward myself by reading something interesting online or checking my rankings in market samurai!
    Alison

    • Hey Alison, looks like you’ve got yourself a really good productivity system set up! :)

  • Hi Shane

I find that working to a schedule is the only way for me.
I have multiple clients (SEO) and multiple projects and it is all too easy to get lost.

So I prepare a daily list of ‘must dos’ and then fit them in to the daily work plan (which is always a bit fluid).

The trouble is that I am always fighting the temptation to work on the fun stuff rather than the mundane tasks. The latter being the things that actually produce the results.

I now keep simple notes on each project so that I can see what I did and when.

I am also a very visual type of worker and like to see the processes in graphical form as well as a list of tasks. For promotion work I use a bubble chart (like you presented in the Backlink Battle Plan) for each keyword phrase and simply cross each bubble/task as it is done. This way I can see exactly where I am on each project and can easily chop and change projects without getting lost.

It probably sounds like a lot of extra work, but its not really, and has provided a huge benefit to my business.

    Rich

    • That’s a good point. I think with time/task management, that’s the fine line you need to negotiate: When is the task-management just eating up too much time and when is it actually helping your productivity? Spending some time on task management definitely helps, if it’s done right, though.

  • Hi Shane

That’s a bit of a blow re the YTube! As far as time I work around school hours. I try and get the stuff that needs brain power done in the morning as I’m more productive then :)
I’ve just started using the free version of toodledo.com it’s really very good and is definitely making more productive. It’s like a challenge for me to get that task list cleared every day.

The idea is I brain dumped EVERYTHING in there and add to it as new stuff comes in. Doing that it seems to keep my head clearer as it’s all recorded and I don;t have to rely on my brain remembering stuff at the right time :)

Have a good week everyone :)
    Lynne

    • Ah yes, it’s always good to get things out of your head! On the other hand, too many tasks and to-dos cluttering up too many lists is also something I’ve struggled with…

  • I work on a schedule. It might vary by 30 mins here and there, but it’s become habit. Mornings = content generation. Evenings = community, email, planning, site admin.

  • Hi Shane

Important lesson for us all re Youtube and sorry to hear of your experience

Find I do my most productive work in the morning and use the afternoons for planning and catchup stuff

Is there a link to your new Affiliate program? I missed the webinar and it’s not online now, at least not through the original link

Thanks as always for sharing Tony

  • Normally ot is a daily schedule but with the %$#t hitting the fan over Xmas with kelogger viruses and family illness it would be great just to get back to having some free time…sigh!
